Today (or last night? My Spotify isn’t clear on this) Blink-182 released their first recorded song since Tom DeLonge’s departure last year and their subsequent welcoming of Matt Skiba into the fold. It’s called “Bored to Death” and you can check it out below.
So, yeah. It definitely has that familiar, mid-aughts pop punk feel, complete with the staples of the genre: muffled drum intro; tinny, echo-y vocals; an entire bridge comprised of repeated “oh”-s, as self-deprecatory lyrics weave in and out between them. But it also carries the torch forward in terms of further experimenting with their sound, blending some of the familiar, more serious-laden hooks we’ve been accustomed to since “Adam’s Song,” with a noticeable Skibaizaton of the writing. I won’t say I’m in love with it, but I’m definitely looking forward to hearing more.
California comes out July 1.
